Abstract

This chapter explores the integration experiences of Syrian refugee young adults in the adult education (AE) sector in Quebec, Canada. Drawing upon 14 semi-structured interviews with Syrian refugee students, this chapter explores how the institutional environment of AE impacts students’ aspirations and thereby their integration trajectories into Quebec society. The chapter utilizes an integrated theoretical framework combining integration theory with the capabilities approach, to draw attention to the agentic and structural factors which influence refugees’ integration processes. The findings suggest that AE is not an opportune site for refugee integration as students face several cultural and structural barriers which impede their capacities to advance and thrive. The chapter concludes with a call to action for policymakers to make changes in teaching strategies and some structural changes in the system which would better address the educational needs of young adult refugees so that they are able to integrate into resettlement contexts in Quebec and Canada.
