Abstract
In this work, we demonstrated how Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) can be used to analyze the adsorption characteristics of environmental contaminants, including the adsorption isotherms and the oxidation states of the adsorbed species. Resorcinol and silver(I) (Ag+) were used as examples of organic pollutants and toxic chemicals, respectively. Resorcinol adsorption on the microporous carbon followed Freundlich isotherm, while silver adsorption followed Redlich-Peterson isotherm. ASV further showed that Ag+ ions were chemically reduced to Ag0 upon the adsorption on microporous carbon surface. Using ASV technique, both resorcinol and Ag+ can be detected simultaneously at a microporous carbon electrode. In addition to the adsorption process, we showed that the microporous structure of the carbon material altered the diffusion regime from linear to thin-layer behaviour, and thus significantly altered the responses of diffusion-controlled voltammetry.
