Abstract

1. A new method is presented for calculating the volumes of the large voids in synthetic type X zeolites, starting from the x-ray structure data. 2. The volumes calculated for the voids of type X zeolites are in good agreement with the maximum adsorptive volumes of dehydrated zeolite crystals for water, nitrogen, and hydrocarbons. 3. In contrast with type A zeolites, when nitrogen is adsorbed by type X zeolites filling of both the large and the small voids occurs. 4. From the experimental values of the maximum adsorption and the calculated volumes of the voids in A and X zeolites it has been shown that for all practical purposes the materials adsorbed in the voids have the same density as in the volume liquid phase.
