Abstract

1. The electrolysis of pivalic acid in the presence of tetraethylammonium fluoride hydrofluoride on Pt leads to the formation of the monofluorinated product, and to perfluorinated compounds on nickel. 2. Both the degree and character of the fluorination of the tert-butyl radical generated on the electrode are explained by adsorption on the electrode surface.
