Abstract

A molecular-thermodynamic model is presented for adsorption of dissociating organic solutes from aqueous solution onto a heterogeneous surface. Electrochemical equilibria and diffuse double layer theory are used to account for the effects of pH and ionic strength. The model is tested with new experimental data for adsorption of aniline, benzoic acid, and paranitrophenol on two activated carbons.
