Abstract

Adsorption data of methane, ethane, propane, and n-butane on a mesoporous Sc 2O 3 sample are presented. A volumetric technique was used to obtain the experimental data. The adsorbent texture was studied by nitrogen adsorption. The adsorption isotherms cover the range from 213 to 373 K, at pressures up to 55 kPa. The theory of the adsorption potential has been applied to fit the experimental data and to correlate the adsorption data of the different adsorbates. A multilayer adsorption approach has also been used, surface heterogeneity being introduced by means of an exponential distribution function for the energies of the adsorption sites. This function has three parameters, whose values are in good agreement with those obtained from the thermodynamic treatment of the adsorption data.
