Abstract

The specific adsorption of chloride ions on mercury has been investigated by capacitance and electrocapillary methods in three water-methanol mixtures, having various mole fractions of methanol. The surface concentration of Cl− ions is determined by graphical differentiation of the Parsons Φ-function, defined as the surface pressure of a specifically adsorbed component. As additional tests of specific adsorption in studied systems the slopes (∂q−'/∂qM)c, and ∂E+/∂(2RT/F) log a±]qM are calculated.
