Abstract

The adsorption of a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) cationic surfactant on a natural zeolite from an aqueous solution is studied for a wide range of concentrations. It is shown that a modified BET equation can be used for bimolecular adsorption. It is found that after the first few hours of adsorption from a premicellar solution, there is a lack of both cetyltrimethylammonium cations and bromide anions, due to their codiffusion to the ion-exchange sites. It is concluded that adsorption from a colloidal solution occurs via the adsorption of micelles, their subsequent degradation, and the formation of a bimolecular adsorption layer.
