Abstract

Borate adsorption on passive iron has been investigated with in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It is shown that borate ions adsorb on passive iron in borate buffer solutions, and that their presence at the interface is of fundamental importance in stabilizing the passive film in these solutions. Borate ions are probably strongly bound to the surface, thus impeding the diffusion of Fe 2+ ions through the film, and reducing the anodic ion dissolution current to a very low value. Co-adsorption of borate and phosphate was observed. Sulphate ions, however, displace borate from the interphase, breaking down the passive film.
