Abstract

Adsorption of 59Fe on ferric acetate precipitates was studied in acetate buffer solutions in order to separate radioactive iron nuclides from other radionuclides such as chromium, manganese, cobalt and zinc. Effects of pH, buffer concentrations, amounts of precipitates, agitation times and specific activities on the 59Fe adsorption were investigated. The adsorption mechanism is considered to be due to heterogeneous isotopic exchange between ferric ion in buffer solutions and acetate precipitates. The adsorption procedure might be useful for rapid and simple radiochemical separation of iron nuclides in water.
