Abstract

The adsorption of 1,10-phenanthroline and quinoline by charcoal from single aqueous solutions and from mixtures has been studied. Single plateau high affinity adsorption isotherms were obtained for 1,10-phenanthroline in the presence and absence of quinoline, while the isotherm of quinoline exhibited two plateaus in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline. The area per adsorbate molecule for each substance, as obtained from the data, indicates that both molecules lie flat with their rings in contact with the charcoal surface. This orientation is the same in adsorption from single and mixed solutions except at relatively high quinoline concentrations in the latter case where a decrease in the area per quinoline molecule is observed.
