Abstract

In this study, we investigate the dye adsorption capacity and properties of a Chitosan Nanoparticle-MMT Nanocomposite (CSNP - MMT nanocomposite). Chitosan nanoparticles combined with MMT nanocomposite demonstrated excellent adsorption capacity for Rhodamine 6G dye. Adsorption isotherms were used to determine the maximum adsorption capacity and rate of adsorption, demonstrating the superior efficiency of chitosan nanoparticle with MMT nanocomposite over their individual counterparts. With the evaluation of diffusion studies, the mechanism of adsorption is also proposed. In batch experiments, the effects of dosage, pH and temperature on the adsorption process were investigated. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were used to fit the equilibrium data and the best-fit model was determined using the coefficient of determination (R2). The Langmuir model was found to be the best-fitting with R2 very close to unity (0.9995–0.9863) and the highest biosorption capacity 34.26mg/g at 30 °C.
