Abstract

The adsorbed states of oxygen on the Pd(1 1 0) surface have been studied using vibrational electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). As the Pd(1 1 0) clean surface is exposed to oxygen at 100K and subsequently heated to ≈400–800K, a sequence of superstructures (“complex”, “ c(2 x 6)”, c(2 x 4) and (2 x 3) – 1D) is formed. The oxygen adatoms forming these superstructures are considered to occupy essentially the same sites, possibly, the long-bridge sites. Structural models for the c(2 x 4) and (2 x 3) – 1D surfaces are discussed.
