Abstract

A systematic study of the lattice dynamics of several (2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2) overlayers on Ni(100) leads to the conclusion that the reconstruction of the nickel surface with a carbon overlayer is of the softphonon type. The reconstruction is driven by the freezing of the ${S}_{1}$ nickel surface phonon.
