Abstract

The plasma-11-hydroxycorticosteroid response to a single intramuscular injection of 1 mg. tetracosactrin depot has been compared with that after a standard 5-hour tetracosactrin infusion in nine convalescent patients with chronic rheumatic disorders who had never received corticosteroid therapy and over 4 hours in a group of ten steroid-treated patients. There was no significant difference in response to infusion or intramuscular injection in either group. It is suggested that it may now be possible to test adrenocortical responsiveness without recourse to intravenous infusion or naturally occurring corticotrophin preparations.
