Abstract

The effect of alpha adrenergic blockade with phentolamine on vasopressin-induced growth hormone elevations was tested in ten female volunteers. Only half of the subjects exhibited a plasma HGH rise following vasopressin administration. In the subjects who showed a plasma HGH response to vasopressin (“responders”), alpha adrenergic blockade inhibited the growth hormone response to approximately one-third of the response in the same subject without adrenergic blockade. This effect of adrenergic blockade could not be attributed to differences in blood glucose or plasma FFA. It is concluded that the stimulation of growth hormone secretion by vasopressin is mediated at least in part through catecholamines.
