Abstract

The development of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) is common among aging men. Accompanying the development of BPH may be impairment of the bladder’s ability to store and empty urine. Symptoms may include frequent urination, urgent voiding, an intermittent and diminished urinary stream, straining to void, nocturia, and a sense of incomplete bladder emptying. Collectively, these symptoms may be referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms, or LUTS. In advanced stages, elevated postvoid residual urine, urinary tract infections, hydronephrosis, impairment of renal function, and urinary retention may develop.
