Abstract

Eight adult female ovariectomized monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were given subcutaneous injections of ACTH (80 USP U) daily for periods of 29–45 days. Lactation, ranging from straw-colored fluid to lipid-rich milk, was induced in 5 of 8 animals. In all subjects, the perineal sex skin was transformed from the pale color characteristic of castration to the red shades found after steroid administration. Withdrawal bleeding, such as that seen on discontinuing estrogen treatment in ovariectomized animals, occurred in 4 of 8 animals. Spontaneous menstrual bleeding was seen in 2 of the series and a well-developed endometrium was found at autopsy in an additional animal. Histological examination of wedge biopsies from the uterus of ACTH-treated animals showed an endometrium characteristic of estrogen stimulation with glandular proliferation.
