Abstract

ABSTRACT Reviews the Jewish concept of adoption as reflected in Biblical and Talmudic sources. An historic view of adoption in Jewish law, custom and practice is presented, up through the contemporary American Jewish community. The author concludes that while Jewish tradition recognizes adoption as the spiritual equivalent of procreation, it also teaches that a child never completely loses his or her birth identity.
