Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity worldwide. However, fast charging systems are crucial for the success of the commercialization of EVs. These systems are heavily reliant on having highly efficient charging stations to reduce the charging time. An EV charger with high total harmonic distortion (THD) can affect both the charging time and battery life. In this research, the Vienna rectifier was adopted due to the low THD, high power density, and high efficiency. Employing Matlab/Simulink software with two simulation scenarios, the proposed Vienna rectifier using the voltage-oriented control technique was implemented and simulated. Charging the EV battery using a constant current controller (CC) at different values and charging the battery directly without the controller are the two scenarios. The simulation results showed that the proposed charger is capable of providing fast charging with low THD allowing the battery to be charged in a shorter charging time less than 15 minutes.
