Abstract

1. The transition to the International System of Units (SI) in the sphere of force measurements requires a number of preparatory measures owing to the essential difference between the existing unit of force (kg-wt) and the SI unit, the newton. 2. It is advisable to raise the numerical values of the limiting efforts in dynamometer installations, expressed in kg-wt by one order when converting them to newtons. It should be noted that the new value will be greater than the old by 1.97%. 3. Both the stationary and portable dynamometer equipment should be manufactured from January 1, 1963, for measuring force in SI units. 4. Existing reference portable dynamometers with a blank scale do not require any alterations in converting them to the SI units, since they can be used for measuring force in any unit. 5. Existing traction dynamometers with an inscribed scale should be recalibrated for SI units (newtons) by replacing the dynamometer scales. 6. Existing stationary dynamometer machines (both commercial and reference) can be converted with no great difficulty for measuring in SI units. 7. Tables for converting kg-wt/mm2 pressure units into SI units should be worked out and distributed.
