Abstract

Purpose Posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has wide treatment variation resulting in unnecessary resource utilization. Significant pain following this procedure is common and opioid medications are the foundation of postoperative pain management. Opioid usage and difficulties with pain can impact mobilization, gastric motility, discharge readiness, and patient satisfaction. The Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of care is one method to decrease variability and eliminate waste through standardization of care.
