Abstract

Many people suffer from urinary incontinence and associated social and psychological problems, which may have detrimental effects on their self-esteem and quality of life, preventing some from leading a normal and healthy lifestyle. By adopting a positive approach to continence promotion, awareness, education and training many of these problems can be appropriately treated and/or cured. This article discusses ways in which health professionals can promote such an approach by raising general awareness, providing continence services and by acknowledging the very real possibility of cure. An increased awareness of the issues surrounding continence may encourage clients who were previously too embarrassed or afraid to overcome these feelings and seek the clinical support and help they need to manage their problems of incontinence.
