Abstract
Adolescence, once regarded as mainly a transitional period from childhood to adulthood, is now being considered an area of specialization needing special techniques and procedures. This monograph is a much needed contribution to the still scant literature on the hospital treatment of adolescents. Well written, with a sense of humor, the book reviews the literature, and then pursues the adolescent and his family through all aspects of the hospitalization in a small university-affiliated hospital. Dr. Hartmann and his group report on the growing trend toward the establishment of special programing for the treatment of adolescents within the general psychiatric hospital.
