Abstract

A small, descriptive survey investigated the provision of age-appropriate activities for adolescents in 33 hospital units in the United Kingdom. The study was based on psychodynamic theory and Havighurst’s (1952) tasks of adolescence. A convenience sample of nurses with a declared interest in adolescent care was used to ascertain what facilities were available in their own clinical area. Variations were noticeable in facilities to support all aspects of adolescent care and development but there was consensus on the educational requirements for nurses working with young people. It is recommended that adolescent care needs are addressed in all nurse education courses in all branches and that child, adolescent and family mental health must be included as an integral part of children’s nursing courses.
