Abstract

Severe, early deprivation increases the risk for psychopathology and developmental compromise throughout early and middle childhood. Less is known about adolescence, a period in which many mental illnesses appear for the first time. The Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP) is the only randomized, controlled trial of foster care that serves as an alternative to institutional care among children who had been abandoned in infancy and were being raised in institutions. The papers in this Symposium are focused on psychopathology and competence in adolescence.
