Abstract

The splendid summary by McAnarney of 30 years of progress in adolescent medicine stimulates me to reflect on my experience in the private practice of pediatrics and adolescent medicine during this period. I recognized the need to improve my skills in relating to adolescent patients 30 years ago when many children I first knew as newborns were reaching the second decade of life. I was fortunate to be entering the adolescent field at a time when Roswell Gallagher and his colleagues were providing thought-provoking seminars throughout the country. I remember these gatherings and the formal and informal discussions as being extremely helpful at that moment in my professional life.
