Abstract

In this study, we investigated adolescent career development and its relationships to serf-concept development and identity formation using a conceptual framework derived from Super's theory of career development and contemporary theorizing on self-concept development (Harter, 1983,1990) and identity formation (Marcia, 1966,1980). Subjects were 134 ninth graders and 134 twelfth graders attending a parochial high school Male and female subjects were represented equally in the two grades. Each student completed the following measures: Career Development Inventory, Career Decision Scale, Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents, and Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status. Grade and sex differences were found in career maturity as indexed by exploration, planning, certainty, and indecision Hypothesized relationships of career maturity to self-concept and identity status were confirmed partially.
