Abstract

Achieving a level of moderate sedation is necessary in order to carry out an endoscopy. Nurses who endoscope and administer sedation need to take particular care that they have sufficient knowledge and skills to optimize the safety of patients, and ensure they can adequately defend their practice should any legal challenges ensue. While the British Society of Gastroenterology has provided a framework for administering sedation, nurse endoscopists need to exercise good clinical judgment to avoid the considerable risks involved.
