Abstract
The present paper is based on a country wide survey of administration of school education in India. The paper discusses the status of policy reforms over the years and their implications on educational administration. It notes that administrative structures and practices of secondary education have failed to respond to the increases in enrolment and monitoring of quality. It identifies some key areas of structure and function that need urgent reform in the context of universalising secondary education and the launch of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan.
