Abstract

Adjuvant radiotherapy combined with 5-Fluorouracil-based chemotherapy has become the new standard after curative resection of high-risk gastric cancer patients. Besides many complications due to surgery, the addition of chemoradiotherapy as adjuvant treatment may lead to acute and late toxicities. Among the well known ones are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malabsorption, renal, and metabolic complications. One of the less known effects is the decrease of the pancreatic reserve resulting in glucose intolerance with possible diabetogenic effect due to incidental and unavoidable inclusion of the pancreatic tissue within the adjuvant radiation treatment field.
