Abstract

Gastrointestinal (GI) nursing has a long and honourable tradition of leading changes within the profession and advancing nursing practice. Traditionally, this has been in evidence with stoma care (one of the oldest and best established examples of nurse specialists) and more recently with the development of the nurse endoscopist role. These roles have focused on qualified nurses developing the range and complexity of their work plus advancing practice to enhance patient care and maximize service delivery (Johnston, 2008).
