Abstract

This study used non-participant observation to examine the positioning of stroke patients on one rehabilitation ward. Nursing staff were given a short physiotherapist-led training programme on patient positioning before the period of observation commenced. The findings showed that the stroke patients spent an average of 26 per cent of their time in a poor position. The deliberate adjustment of patients’ positions by nurses was a rare event, and the authors suggest that this aspect of care needs to be given a higher priority. 21 references.
