Abstract

We present the realization of an adjusted quarter wave plate using a ferrofluid based on γ-Fe 2O 3 ferrimagnetic material. The 90° phase shift of this component is obtained with a tolerance estimated to a few 0.01° using a null ellipsometric method. The change of magnetic field strength, volume concentration of magnetic material or thickness of the plate allows to optimize the characteristics of the component in the visible–near IR spectrum.
