Abstract

The use of adjunct instruction in social work is examined with special attention to potential advantages and disadvantages that are inherent. A comprehensive framework is provided that highlights key issues and provides guidelines for developing a plan to support the coherent use of adjunct instruction in social work education. The framework is organized around four basic components: (1) recruitment and orientation; (2) development and training; (3) retention issues; and (4) overall management of a pool of adjunct faculty. Because the use of adjunct instructors represents a valued opportunity to bring current practitioners into the classroom and is likely to increase in the coming years, a structured approach to utilizing adjunct instructors is especially relevant to social work and social work education.
