Abstract

The research reported here extends previous work on levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD found in adipose tissues of Vietnamese living in various parts of Vietnam. The purpose of this ongoing research is to ascertain whether populations exist within Vietnam with elevated levels of TCDD for possible future health studies. Nondetectable levels were found previously in persons residing in the north of Vietnam where few chemicals contaminated with dioxins have been used, and higher levels of TCDD, averaging 22 ppt on a lipid basis, were found in parts of the south, where chemicals contaminated with dioxins, including the herbicide Agent Orange, have been used. Levels from 14 additional patients from the south of Vietnam are reported in this paper. In addition to data from hospitalized surgical patients from Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), dioxin levels from hospitalized patients from two other geographical areas, Hue and Dong Nai Province, are also provided. Values reported here are somewhat lower on average than those previously reported for persons living in the south of Vietnam.
