Abstract

Adipose derived stem cells (ASC) offer tremendous potential for clinical applications due to their easy accessibility and multi-lineage differentiation capacity. We have investigated whether these cells can be differentiated into functional Schwann cells which could potentially be used to enhance nerve regeneration following injury. Rat visceral fat was enzymatically digested and putative stem cells were isolated from the mature adipocytes by centrifugation, and enriched following differential adhesion to tissue culture plastic.
