Abstract

A description of transport in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) regime in terms of edge channels has recently gained much attention (Halperin, 1982; Streda et al.,1987; Buttiker, 1988). Experimentally, it has been shown that at a sufficiently high magnetic field and on an appropriate short lenght scale the transport in edge channels can take place adiabatically, i.e. without inter-channel scattering (van Wees et al., 1989). In this case edge channels can be treated as independent one-dimensional current carrying channels.
