Abstract

An adiabatic model based on the perturbed stationary state method is presented to explain the enhancement of subbarrier fusion cross sections. It is shown that this method reproduces excelentlly the coupled channel prediction of fusion cross sections well below the Coulomb barrier. It is clarified that the coupling among collective inelastic excitations leads to a fair underestimate of subbarrier fusion cross sections in 40Ar+ 122Sn and 58Ni+ 58Ni but that it can explain the isotope shift of fusion cross sections in 16O+ 148,150,154Sm.
