Abstract

Useful performance characteristics of adhesives in particular for space borne optics, not reported elsewhere and cannot be modeled completely with the generally known properties, have been reported in this paper. The bonded optical assembly shall have the required performance characteristics after subjected to certain thermo-mechanical-vacuum environments. An experimental study has been carried out on two different space heritage adhesives viz. Epotek-301 and 3M 2216 Gray particularly on optical surface distortion, lap shear strength and out-gassing. The cases where optical assembly with Epotek-301, fail to meet the surface figure requirements are identified. We also propose a new method to reduce surface distortion in the case of Epotek-301 for certain applications. Activity taken on alternate adhesive 3M 2216 Gray to meet our acceptance criteria is also reported here.
