Abstract

While it is known that almost all umbilical hernias in infants disappear spontaneously during the first few years of life, authorities differ as to whether any treatment is necessary. Some authors believe that mechanical strapping with adhesive tape hastens disappearance of the hernia. The present study concerns 100 cases, 51 of which had the hernia strapped and 49 served as controls. Hernias protruding less than 6 mm disappeared equally quickly in both groups and usually before 12 months of age. If the protrusion was more than 6 mm, strapping greatly increased the cure rate. No advantage was gained if the strapping was done after 6 months of age. Strapping of the larger hernias was recommended before the baby became 6 months of age.
