Abstract

A new human extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma cell line (OCUCh-LM1) and a new human colon cancer cell line (OCUC-LM1) were established from respective hepatic metastases in our laboratory. Cells of both lineages express various carbohydrate antigens such as sialyl Lewisx and SPan-1. Recent studies have shown a cell adhesion molecule called ELAM-1, which is expressed on vascular endothelium, to be capable of recognizing sialyl Lewisx as a ligand. In this report, we demonstrate that carbohydrate antigen SPan-1, which has a different epitope from sialyl Lewisx, plays a significant role in the adhesion of human cancer cells to endothelial cells.
