Abstract

Adhesion and detachment experiments were performed with alcane droplets on glass surfaces which were chemically or mechanically roughened. For decane droplets, water films were unstable above a certain critical roughness; the contact angle hysteresis is found to be an increasing and then decreasing function of roughness.
