Abstract

Adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified (NOS) is a group of salivary carcinomas with glandular and ductal differentiation. This article presents a narrative review that aims to determine the conduct and treatment of adenocarcinoma NOS by the optics of the dental surgeon and speech therapist. To identify the study object, articles published between 1998 and 2019, listed in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and PUBMED, indexed with the following descriptors: adenocarcinomas, not otherwise specified adenocarcinomas, and salivary gland adenocarcinomas were chosen. The adenocarcinoma NOS is a neoplasm of high degree of malignancy, with histologic aspect of ductal differentiation and presence of infiltrate in the margins of the tumor. The diagnosis is given by excluding groups of known lesions. The tumor staging is defined as follows: stage I and II are considered initial stages and the stages III and IV are advanced. The ideal treatment is through complete surgical excision of the lesion and contiguous lymph nodes, neoadjuvant radiotherapy, and speech therapy in the rehabilitation of altered voice and swallowing functions, which are the sequelae of the adopted treatment. In view of this, the interdisciplinary action between odontology and speech therapy is indispensable in the therapy of head and neck cancer.
