Abstract

Ten million deaths due to antimicrobial resistance are anticipated by 2050.1 As such, antimicrobial resistance is a current focus of the global medical community. With the anticipated rapid growth in deaths associated with multiresistant infections, antimicrobial stewardship programmes are expected to direct their efforts towards reducing the consumption of antimicrobials. Despite this situation, the gastroenterology community is calling for population-based programmes to eliminate Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) for the prevention of gastric cancer and other diseases related to H pylori infection.
