Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”1. Consequently, mental health is a construct composed of psychological, emotional, social and environmental issues which includes a person’s ability to function under adversity and also to adapt to changes around them.
Highlights
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”1
Current models -- including diagnostic tools promoted by the American Psychiatric Association (2014) in DSM 5 -- suggest understanding psychic trauma in a similar way as we understand organic trauma: by examining the affected individual’s wound or individual injury. This is the so-called “medical model” that misses key issues experienced during crisis situations which can result in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
As we review the present condition and project ourselves into the future, we can identify several mental health issues resulting from the coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic
