Abstract

The lack of availability or access to nutritionally adequate and safe food, known as food insecurity, affects approximately one in five Philadelphians. Potential for health complications and chronic illness increases for affected individuals. Food deserts, low income, and lack of transportation are contributing factors that lead to food insecurity. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania largely serves Philadelphia, making the need to address this disparity an essential aspect of providing equitable patient care. The need for an intervention that provides food directly to food-insecure postpartum patients was identified.
