Abstract

This year’s SSCI plenary session is focused on the future. We incorporated presentations of some exciting directions (pharmacogenomics) and problematic issues (the relationship of academia and the pharmaceutical industry) that will be important in the coming years. And the SSCI organization is dedicated to the future development of academic physicians. Focusing on the future seems particularly germane in New Orleans where the recovery from disaster and the planned renaissance has to be totally forward thinking. We have realized from August 30, 2005 onward that dwelling on the past, or even on today, is not helpful or even desirable. But we have also learned that one cannot rely on others to guarantee a bright future—more on this later.
