Abstract

The exceptionally rich records of Hymenoptera obtained by D. Baldock as a result of his operating a Malaise trap in the Conservation Area in 2001 were reported in Supplement XXXIV. Many other insects were of course trapped and were passed on to G. A. Collins (GAC), D. Gibbs (DG) and R. M. Palmer (RMP) for naming. This present supplement mainly reports their results. Of 294 species recorded, 15 have Red Data Book (RDB) or Nationally Notable status confirming the importance of Kew as a site for the conservation of insects. RDB grades of threat comprise RDB 1 5 for extinct, very rare (and other grades of rarity) and endangered. Below these are Nationally Notable A (Na) and Nationally Notable B (Nb) and these species in particular have become an accepted way of assessing the Conservation importance of an area. Many of the 294 species have been recorded already, mostly, in the case of lepidoptera, in the very early reports. To save space only records of species previously unrecorded have been included (save in a few cases) but a complete list is available from The Horticulture and Public
