Abstract

The high-frequency excitation of atomic nitrogen has been studied in the vacuum ultraviolet. Intensities and wavelengths have been listed for further 146 N I lines. The analysis has given 26 new N I levels. Small corrections to the levels 2p3 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 improving the connexion of the high levels, have not altered these. A two-parameter polarization formula, adjusted to the configurations (3P)nl with l = 3 and 4, has verified the ionization limit, 117 225.66 ± 0.11 cm-1 (3P0), and supplied a value for the core dipole polarizability, 3.72 ± 0.03a03.
